Question Of The Day: "How To Prepare"

At Oracle OpenWorld I received a number of questions about the “best way to study” from people who had never certified or hadn't upgraded in a while. By following this simple path you can almost certainly improve your knowledge and skills (the most important objective) and also do well on the exam(s).

Here are the steps:

1. Fully understand the certification requirements for the track that you are pursuing.

  • How many exams are there?
  • Is there a course requirement?
  • Are there any prerequisites?
  • What are the recommended courses, practice exams, etc.?

2. Carefully review the objectives for each exam and perform a “gap analysis”.

  • Review each set of exam objectives independently.
  • Grade your understanding and experience on each objective – high (10), medium (5) or low (1).

3. Based upon your “gap analysis,” build a comprehensive study plan and follow it.

  • Choose study types that you prefer (hands-on practice, course attendance, flash cards, white papers, books, etc.)

4. Reevaluate your gap analysis and update your study plan

  • By reviewing your progress you can continue to tweak and customize your study plan and will become more efficient in making progress.

It is important to note that multiple methods of study will expand your knowledge and skills further than just one. I highly recommend that you include a healthy amount of hands-on practice along with other more conventional methods that you choose.

Remember your goal in getting certified is not only to pass the exam(s), but more importantly to improve your knowledge and skills. Each gap that you identify represents an opportunity to do become a better IT professional.

Value of Certification: Risk Management

Although the post is admittedly a bit old, the message is still valid today:
"In a world where risk management and business continuity planning are essential pursuits for any healthy IT organization, every asset needs to be defined and monitored, and that includes technical skills. There's no better way to accomplish that than through a consistent, well-conceived means of documenting who has what skills. And that means certification."

Oracle Enterprise Linux - New production exam (1Z0-402) now live:

Oracle’s new Enterprise Linux Administrator Certified Associate (OCA) certification endorses skilled Linux administrators in the knowledge and techniques required to competently manage complex enterprise-scale Linux systems, including initial installation, management of user accounts and disk space, and troubleshooting and correcting unexpected system behavior.

Earning this new Linux certification from Oracle requires the successful completion of two exams:

The second exam [403] has just successfully completed beta testing and we will be announcing its live release date shortly.

Waive one Linux OCA exam with an existing Linux certification!

Candidates holding an existing Linux certification from LPI, Linux+, Ubuntu, Red Hat, or Novell need only take one test!

The second exam (Enterprise Linux System Administration / 1Z0-403) is the only one required for those meeting these qualifications, allowing for a quick shortcut to Oracle Enterprise Linux Administrator Certified Associate (OCA) certification.

Beta testing now open for Oracle Database 11g DBAs

Candidates holding the Oracle Database 11g Administrator Certified Associate (OCA) have only one exam standing between them and an upgrade to the title of Oracle Database 11g Administrator Certified Professional (OCP): exam "Oracle Database 11g: Administration II" (1Z0-053), which has just opened in beta.

This new Oracle certification exam measures the in-depth skills and knowledge required for system specialists to back up and recover databases, configure Oracle databases for optimal recovery, administer ASM disk groups, use RMAN backups to duplicate databases, and automate tasks with the Scheduler.

Complete certification information including exam and training details can be found by clicking the track link above.

New Study Finds that 87% of IT Pros Feel Certification is Worthwhile

From GoCertify.com March 17, 2008

A recent IT salary survey of over 7,000 computer professionals co conducted by TechRepublic and Global Knowledge found that 42% of respondents intend to obtain a new certification within the next year, and 38% hold at least one certification that they consider primary already. Perhaps more telling, 87% indicated that certification is a worthwhile investment, with a major motivation being that it is an effective way to keep skills up to date and demonstrate that accomplishment to employers. Certification: Interview with general manager of Microsoft Learning

"There’s no question that experience is important. Certification programs are not meant to replace on-the-job experience. But experience in itself doesn't automatically guarantee that someone understands the full breadth of a product’s capability. We insist that all other professionals – doctors, dentists, pilots, architects, etc. – have both experience and a specific credential. Clearly the winning combination is experience plus certification..."
